Ahrefs and Semrush are the two tools every SaaS SEO conversation ends up at. They also top our keyword research tools ranking, for different jobs. They overlap on 80 percent of features, differ on the 20 percent that matters for your stage, and both cost more than a seat of most other marketing software. This comparison is written for a SaaS marketing team deciding which one to put on the card, based on using both across client accounts.

This guide covers ahrefs vs semrush for SaaS teams: what it means, why it matters, and the practical steps to get it right.

The short verdict

  • Under 20,000 organic sessions a month: buy neither. Use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free), Search Console, and the free tools on this site.
  • Link building is the priority: Ahrefs. The backlink index is larger and updates faster.
  • Keyword research, content briefs and paid search live in one team: Semrush. Better intent labels, PPC data and the content toolkit.
  • Agency or multi-product company: Semrush for project limits, Ahrefs if backlinks dominate the work.

Both charge extra for additional users and both have usage limits that matter: Ahrefs meters crawl credits and Semrush meters report rows. A team of three doing daily research will outgrow the entry plans of both within a quarter.

Keyword research

Semrush Keyword Magic Tool returns more raw ideas and labels intent on every row. The labels are good for consumer terms and mediocre for B2B software terms, where “platform” and “software” get called informational too often. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer groups ideas by parent topic and shows traffic potential for the top-ranking page, which is a better estimate of what you would actually get than raw volume. Both numbers are models rather than measurements, so read them alongside our guide to estimating website traffic.

Google Keyword Planner product page
Keyword Planner is free with an Ads account and its volumes come straight from Google. The ranges are wide without active spend, which is the trade-off.
Search results for a commercial software query
A commercial query returns listicles and directories, not product pages. Any tool that tells you this term is easy has not looked at who owns page one.

For SaaS specifically: run either export through the Keyword Intent Classifier, which uses rules tuned for B2B software terms, and follow the SaaS keyword research process.

Backlink data

Ahrefs wins. Its index is larger, refreshes faster and its Link Intersect and Best by Links reports are the ones link builders live in. Semrush Backlink Analytics has closed the gap on size but still reports links Ahrefs found weeks earlier. If your link building program is the main use, this decides it.

Site audits

Both crawl and flag technical issues with sensible prioritisation. Semrush Site Audit is friendlier for non-technical marketers with its thematic reports. Ahrefs Site Audit is faster and its data explorer lets you build custom filters. Either is fine; for a SaaS marketing site under 5,000 URLs, Screaming Frog free plus Search Console does the same job at no cost, as covered in the technical SEO checklist.

Rank tracking

Semrush Position Tracking updates daily on all plans and includes competitor tracking and local tracking. Ahrefs Rank Tracker updates every few days on lower tiers, daily on higher ones. If daily rank data matters to your reporting, Semrush is cheaper for it.

Content tools

Semrush bundles a content toolkit (topic research, SEO writing assistant, brief generation) that Ahrefs does not match. For teams producing topic clusters at volume, that saves a separate subscription.

Competitor intelligence

Semrush shows paid search data (ads, keywords, estimated budget) alongside organic. For SaaS teams that also run Google Ads, seeing a competitor paid and organic footprint in one place is a real advantage. Ahrefs shows organic only but its Content Gap and Top Pages reports are quicker to act on.

The free tier most startups should use first

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives you full Site Explorer and Site Audit data for any site you verify. That is backlinks, organic keywords and technical issues for your own domain, free, forever. Combined with Search Console and the free tools here, it covers everything a pre-traffic SaaS needs.

Frequently asked questions about Ahrefs vs Semrush

Can I pay for both?

You can, and large teams do, but at under 50,000 sessions a month it is hard to justify. Pick one and add the other when a specific report is missing.

Which has more accurate search volume?

Both estimate. Ahrefs volumes tend to be lower and closer to Search Console impressions for B2B terms; Semrush volumes are higher. Use the ratios for prioritisation, not the absolute numbers.

Is there a cheaper alternative for a SaaS startup?

Yes: the free stack in the free SEO tools guide covers keyword research, technical checks and reporting until you have real traffic to defend.

Do either integrate with GA4 and Search Console?

Both do. Semrush pulls Search Console and GA4 data into its dashboards more deeply; Ahrefs uses Search Console for its free Webmaster Tools verification and some reports.

If neither tool fits, our wider comparison of SEO platforms scores the other options a SaaS team usually shortlists.
