How to use the engagement rate calculator
Pick a platform, enter your follower count, the number of posts you are analysing, and the total likes, comments and shares those posts received. Add impressions if you have them to get engagement by reach, which is the more honest number for accounts with a large, inactive following.
The formulas
- Engagement rate by followers = (total engagements ÷ posts) ÷ followers × 100
- Engagement rate by reach = total engagements ÷ total impressions × 100
- Comments per 1,000 followers is included because comments are the hardest engagement to fake and the best predictor of real reach.
Benchmarks and what to do about them
Benchmarks fall as accounts grow: a 2,000-follower account at 3 percent is ordinary, a 200,000-follower account at 3 percent is excellent. If you are below average, post less and better, open with a question or a bold claim in the first line, reply to every comment in the first hour, and reuse the formats that already earned comments.
Frequently asked questions
Should I count saves and shares?
Yes. They signal more intent than likes and most platforms weight them more heavily in distribution.
Why is my engagement by reach so different from by followers?
Because only a fraction of followers see each post. Engagement by reach measures how the people who actually saw it responded, which is what the algorithm cares about.
