What happened: On September 9, 2026, new data showed that Google has almost finished converting “People Also Ask” into AI Overviews. AlsoAsked sampled 19.2 million English language queries from 2026 and found that 97 percent of PAA answers in the first week of September were AI generated, up from 86 percent in August and roughly 12 percent fourteen months earlier. Mark Williams-Cook of AlsoAsked said “It seems highly likely we are on track for 100 percent shortly.” A second dataset, Allintitle’s Also Ask Miner, already logs 100 percent AI generated PAA answers as of August 2026. Google has not announced this as a formal update, which is exactly why it slipped past most teams.

Why People Also Ask turning into AI Overviews matters for SaaS sites
For most B2B SaaS sites, PAA was the cheapest real estate in Google. You wrote a clear H2 that matched a question, you got pulled into the accordion, and you got a blue link with your domain on it. That link no longer exists in the same form. When the PAA answer is an AI Overview, the answer text is synthesised and your site appears, if at all, as a citation chip next to it.
Three practical consequences:
- Impressions for long tail question keywords stay flat or rise while clicks fall. Your CTR chart looks broken even though nothing broke.
- Middle of funnel questions get absorbed first. “What is X”, “how does X pricing work”, “is X free” are precisely the queries AI Overviews handles well, and precisely the ones that used to feed your trial signups.
- Question based content built for PAA extraction now competes on citation selection, not snippet extraction. Those are different games with different signals.
The People Also Ask numbers
| Period | Share of PAA answers that are AI generated | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Around July 2025 | ~12 percent | AlsoAsked |
| August 2026 | 86 percent | AlsoAsked |
| First week of September 2026 | 97 percent | AlsoAsked, 19.2M query sample |
| August 2026 | 100 percent | Allintitle Also Ask Miner |
The gap between 97 and 100 percent is a sampling difference, not a disagreement. Both datasets point the same direction and the trend line has been steep since spring. Nobody should plan around PAA reverting.

How to check your own exposure
You do not need a new tool for this. Open Search Console, filter Search results to the last 16 months, and export queries that start with what, how, why, is, can, does. Compare clicks and CTR for that segment against the rest of your query set month over month. If the question segment has lost CTR while impressions held, you are watching this happen to your own site. Our guide on measuring SaaS SEO in GA4 and GSC has the exact segment setup if you want it repeatable rather than a one off export.
Then look at which of those pages were built purely as PAA bait. Thin FAQ pages, question pages with 300 words and no product context, glossary entries with no unique data. Those are the pages with the least chance of being cited by an AI Overview, because there is nothing in them a model cannot generate itself.
What to do about People Also Ask now
- Stop optimising question pages for extraction and start optimising them for citation. AI Overviews cite sources that carry something the model cannot synthesise: original benchmarks, pricing you actually tested, screenshots, first party survey numbers, named practitioner quotes. Add one unique fact per question page or merge the page into a stronger parent. This is the same shift we covered in Google’s warning on programmatic SEO, and it applies to question content now too.
- Re-segment your keyword targets by intent, not by volume. Question keywords are still worth ranking for, but the click yield per thousand impressions is now much lower than for comparison, alternatives and integration queries. Rebalance the roadmap toward the query types that still return blue links. Our SaaS keyword research process covers how to score this properly.
- Make sure your citation eligible pages are technically clean. Pages that are slow to render, blocked by a partial robots rule, or shipping broken structured data are less likely to be picked up. Run your key question pages through the schema validator and cross check anything flagged against our technical SEO checklist for SaaS.
- Add AI visibility tracking to your reporting before the next board cycle. If your only metric is organic clicks, this change reads as a failure by your team. Track citation share in AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside clicks so the story is honest. Several of the tools in our AI SEO tools roundup now do this without a custom scraper.

Quick recap: People Also Ask
- People Also Ask answers are now 97 percent AI generated, up from 86 percent in August and about 12 percent fourteen months ago.
- The blue link inside each People Also Ask accordion has effectively gone; your site appears as a citation chip at best.
- Question keywords keep their impressions while People Also Ask stops sending clicks, so CTR falls with no ranking change.
- Check your own exposure by segmenting question queries in Search Console and comparing CTR month over month.
- Rebalance toward comparison, alternatives and integration queries where the SERP still returns links, and optimise question pages for citation rather than extraction.
- Track People Also Ask and AI Overview citation share next to clicks so the reporting stays honest.
The uncomfortable part
There is no recovery play here in the traditional sense. This is not a ranking drop you can diagnose and reverse. Google changed what a SERP feature is, and the traffic that feature used to send is not coming back. The teams that handle this well will be the ones that stop counting question keyword clicks as a growth channel and start counting them as brand exposure, while moving the pipeline number onto query types where a click still happens.
Worth setting a calendar reminder for early October to re-run the same Search Console segment. If AlsoAsked is right about 100 percent arriving shortly, the September to October delta is the one your leadership will ask about.
