What happened: On September 30, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is showing AI Overviews for branded queries again, including searches for Salesforce, Adobe, Amazon, Reddit, Samsung and Apple. Chris Long of Nectiv tested a batch of large brands and wrote that “93% of the brands I tested have AI Overviews appearing.” DemandSphere added that AI Overviews on branded queries “tripled in September.”

For years the brand search was the safe zone. Type “Salesforce” or “Adobe” and you got the homepage, sitelinks, maybe a knowledge panel, and the brand owned the whole page. Google mostly kept AI answers away from these navigational searches. That is changing, and for SaaS companies it touches the one query type that usually converts best.
What changed with AI Overviews for branded queries
Here is everything that is confirmed so far. It is early, the data comes from third-party testing, and Google has not announced anything.
| Item | What we know |
|---|---|
| Large brands in the test with an AI Overview | 93% (Chris Long’s test) |
| Trend during September | AI Overviews on branded queries tripled (DemandSphere) |
| Brands confirmed | Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon, Adobe, Wikipedia, Samsung, Motorola, Yahoo, Apple, Poland Spring |
| Not showing so far | Google’s own brand and news publishers |
| Placement | Mostly mid-page or lower; Adobe’s showed at the top |
| Google statement | None yet |
Placement is the detail I would watch. Most of these AI Overviews for branded queries sit below the brand’s own result, so the homepage click is still there for people who only want to log in. But the summary is the part that answers the follow-up questions a buyer has: what the product does, what it costs, whether it is any good. Google builds that summary from the pages it trusts for your brand, and those are not always your own pages.
Why AI Overviews for branded queries matter for SaaS sites
- Your brand SERP now carries a summary you did not write. If an old G2 review, a Reddit complaint thread or a cached pricing page feeds it, that is what a prospect reads before your homepage.
- Brand clicks can dip while rankings stay at #1. In Search Console this looks like a steady average position, flat impressions and a lower CTR on brand terms. That is a SERP layout change, not a penalty.
- The test only covered big brands. Smaller SaaS brands with thin entity data may see AI Overviews for branded queries later, and the answers may be messier because Google has less to work with.
- It stacks on earlier changes. We covered AI Overview links opening AI Mode instead of your site and the jump in external links inside AI Overviews. Branded AI Overviews bring the same behaviour to your most valuable searches.
What to do this week
- Check your own brand SERP. In an incognito window, search your brand name, “brand pricing”, “brand reviews” and “brand vs top competitor”. Screenshot whether an AI Overview shows and which sources it cites. Repeat once a week so you can see when it starts.
- Split brand CTR in Search Console. Filter queries that contain your brand name and compare the last 28 days with the period before. Our GA4 and Search Console guide shows the regex filter for brand vs non-brand.
- Fix the pages that feed the summary. A plain About page, a current pricing page and a product page that says in simple words what the tool does and who it is for. Add Organization schema and test it with our schema validator.
- Clean up third-party profiles. G2, Capterra, Crunchbase, LinkedIn and Wikipedia if you have a page. Old descriptions and stale prices get repeated word for word in AI answers.
One more practical step: if you track rankings, add AI Overview presence as a column for your brand keyword set. Most rank trackers already flag it as a SERP feature, but many teams only switch it on for non-branded terms. Our guide to getting SaaS pages cited in AI Overviews covers what makes a page easy for Google to quote.
