What happened: Google started the September 2026 spam update on September 24, 2026 at 9:15 a.m. Pacific time. The Search Status Dashboard entry says it “applies globally and to all languages” and that the rollout may take up to two weeks. That is a long window for a spam update. The August one finished in 2 days and 16 hours. John Mueller confirmed the slower pace when asked: “Yes, it’s likely to take longer than some of the previous ones.”

This is the fourth confirmed spam update of the year, after March, June and August. Google has not said which spam tactics it targets this time, and it has not given a share of affected queries. It is also not billed as a link spam update, so this one is most likely about SpamBrain catching on-page and site-level abuse.

Why the September 2026 spam update matters for SaaS sites

Most SaaS marketing sites are not spam sites. The risk sits in the corners. Think of 3,000 thin integration pages built from one template, a glossary nobody edits, “best X alternatives” pages that were spun out in a weekend, or an old partner subdomain hosting coupon content. Those are exactly the page types spam systems look at, and a two-week rollout means a slow bleed rather than a single cliff, so it is easy to miss.

The timing also makes attribution messy. Ranking trackers were already jumpy on September 22 and 23, before Google confirmed anything. AccuRanker, Semrush Sensor, Sistrix, Wincher, Mozcast and several others showed spikes, and Discover publishers reported big swings too. If your traffic moved on the 22nd, that is probably not the September 2026 spam update. If it moves steadily from the 24th into early October, it might be.

We saw a similar pattern earlier this month in our note on the unconfirmed September movement, and last month’s August 2026 spam update hit fast and then went quiet. This one will not be as tidy.

2026 spam updates side by side

Update Start Rollout time Scope
March 2026 spam update March 2026 19 hours 30 minutes Global
June 2026 spam update June 2026 2 days 1 hour Global
August 2026 spam update August 18, 2026 2 days 16 hours Global
September 2026 spam update September 24, 2026, 9:15 a.m. PT Up to 2 weeks (expected) Global, all languages

The jump from under three days to up to fourteen is the part worth noting. A longer rollout usually means Google is pushing changes in stages, so your first read on day two will not be your final read.

What to do during the September 2026 spam update

  1. Mark September 24 in your reporting. Add an annotation in GA4 and your SEO reporting dashboard, and note the 22nd separately. Then compare Search Console clicks by page group, not site-wide totals, once a week until the rollout ends.
  2. Audit your scaled page types first. Pull every template that creates more than 100 URLs (integrations, locations, comparisons, glossary) and check indexed pages versus clicks. Templates with thousands of indexed URLs and almost no clicks are your risk list. Our guide on programmatic SEO for SaaS covers how to add real per-page value.
  3. Check for hacked or rented sections. Look for subfolders or subdomains you do not recognise, odd outbound links in the footer, and old campaign microsites. Search site:yourdomain.com with casino, loan or coupon terms. Hacked spam is still covered by the policy even if you did not put it there.
  4. Do not rush fixes mid-rollout. Wait until Google marks the update complete on the dashboard before you delete or noindex large sections. If you do get hit, Google’s line is that recovery can take months, because its systems need time to see that the site now follows the spam policies.

What we are watching next

Two things. First, whether Google closes the rollout early, like it did with the shorter updates in spring. Second, whether a core update follows soon after, since spam and core updates have landed close together before. We will add an “Update:” line to this post when the dashboard shows the rollout as finished.
